Industrial Design Personal Statement Example
For me Design and Technology has always been an interesting subject, opening up my mind to new things such as being able to interact and use the very materials that surround us, having the ability to tell the difference between CAD and CAM and how they can be used to produce products, from the beginning of Secondary School I’ve always been enthusiastic and creative when using my hands, during my spare time in High school studying D.T. I would run through the basics of polishing Acrylic which is a common thermoplastic used in the Design and technology, which allowed me to both master my skills in finishing materials and also allow me to pass on my skills to lower year students. When undergoing GCSE Resistant materials in Year 10, I would often visit intervention sessions after school just to increase my knowledge before the end of year exams and finish any last minute coursework units. My passion for D.T. grew and with that I was able to succeed the highest grade in my year which had motivated me to take D.T. as an A-level.
Inspired by projects and challenging coursework’s, lead me on to take Product Design as an A-level which was way more than just materials involved, it involved learning software programs such as Photoshop, 2D design as well as Google Sketch up and using them to create, manipulate shapes and colours. At first understanding these programs were quite challenging as they were new to me, although this was very beneficial to both me and the work I had to complete, using Google Sketch up boosted my interest in the modelling tool I was able to create both 3D designs of buildings and modern houses for my coursework, in the opening of my A2 coursework we had the task of comparing and improving the exterior design of my schools Administration block, the need for Google Sketchup was very important as I had to base my ideas on 3D models for my coursework which was very helpful, learning to use software programs has led me to develop my computer skills and has given me an insight on how designers create their 3D models, my AS-level coursework consisted of recreating the well-known board game ‘Monopoly’ in your own desired way I was successful at producing my own very board set which gave me the experience that a Monopoly manufacturer would have such as the processes, graphics and computer skills needed to create the board set.
Using the skills and experience achieved from that project has helped me to understand that most products start off being designed or planned on a 2D or 3D software, which has helped me to understand even more than just materials and processes. I think this course will be very propitious to me as I will be able to interact my skills on materials and processes with programming skills I’ve adapted to along the way. When undertaking work experience at local primary school involved creating a theme sign for the children assembly which involved me using my hands in cutting, finishing and varnishing materials from MDF to acrylic helped me to get an insight of a of how my skills will be in use, this is also allowed me to communicate with the staff at the school which helped me to socially improve my communicative skills, the remaining days of work experience involved me being in design workshops and Art classes to assist younger children.
As an active member at my school’s sports academy I regularly take part in various different activities and events such as being a part of the Sixth Form Football team which helped me to maintain a positive lifestyle and keep my self-feeling healthy inside also managing sports events at the local community centre for both the elderly and young, involved communicating with various different age groups, I hope to be very optimistic about any challenges and events and strive to achieve great outcomes, I hope to use my Designing, computing and communicating skills to share with those who have the same interest in D.T. and I also have high aspirations in the future such as having the objective of producing my very own product with a successful company name to it.
