Example 1: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

My passion for science extends beyond the classroom. As a school prefect, I have mentored younger students, supporting them through personal challenges that may impact their academic performance. This role has strengthened my confidence, communication skills, and ability to explain and teach concepts effectively.

Additionally, I have assisted Year 8 students in Science lessons, helping them grasp key concepts and build confidence in their abilities. I have also supported Year 7 pupils in Maths, introducing them to different problem-solving methods. These experiences highlight my sense of responsibility and trustworthiness, as well as my ability to work collaboratively and perform under pressure. Alongside my academic commitments, I was an active member of the school’s social committee and was honored to be nominated for the role of Head Girl, further enhancing my interpersonal and organizational skills.

Beyond school, I volunteer at Northwick Park Hospital’s café and completed a six-week placement at Boots pharmacy. This experience not only improved my teamwork skills but also deepened my fascination with the crucial role of pharmaceuticals in patient care, enabling individuals to manage their health and maintain daily activities.

My travels have deepened my awareness of the environmental challenges our planet faces, particularly when I met a woman from Argentina whose village was devastated by the operations of a gold-mining corporation. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of raising awareness about the impact of multinational companies, especially in an era increasingly driven by wealth.

While volunteering for an organization in Scotland, I was inspired by their use of artistic activities to encourage community reflection on both local concerns and broader social, economic, and political issues. This demonstrated to me the power of creativity in fostering awareness and engagement.

As a scuba diver, I have often been amazed by the lengths people go to in pursuit of discovery and adventure—an essential part of what makes us human. I am a BSAC Assistant Diving Instructor and Sports Diver, currently working towards my full Instructor qualification, and I would love to share my passion within a university diving club.

Traveling has expanded my perspective on global issues and deepened my curiosity about human origins and societal structures. After my studies, I hope to work in social welfare, contributing meaningfully to improving lives and society.

I have always thrived in academic settings, and my experiences beyond the classroom have reinforced my aspirations. These experiences have made me a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and committed student, eager to engage with the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Example 3: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

In my spare time, I have been engaging in online courses through platforms like FutureLearn, which has allowed me to explore archaeology in greater depth while discussing topics with others. Through these courses, I have gained insight into often-overlooked aspects of archaeology, such as the planning, research, and surveying that occur before and after excavations. Additionally, I am undertaking an Extended Project Qualification, which is helping me refine my research, planning, and evaluation skills.

At college, I volunteer as an Xtra, assisting on open days. This role has strengthened my confidence in both presenting information and actively engaging with others. Beyond academics, I have attended dance lessons from a young age, which has taught me the value of perseverance in achieving success. For the past four years, I have also volunteered at my dance studio, an experience that has enhanced my sense of responsibility and teamwork as I collaborate with instructors to support students in reaching their full potential.

Example 4: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

In 2010, I completed a week-long placement with a reception class at Seaton Infant School. During this experience, I worked one-on-one with less able children, helping them develop their mathematical skills and improve their problem-solving abilities.

Finding creative ways to present information in an engaging manner while encouraging logical thinking was both challenging and rewarding. This experience gave me valuable insight into different learning methods and teaching techniques, reinforcing my ability to adapt my approach to suit individual needs.

Additionally, I have been an active member of my school’s debating society, which has significantly enhanced my public speaking skills and boosted my confidence. It has also given me a platform to discuss important issues in a structured and constructive way.

Completing the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award further developed my teamwork and communication skills, teaching me the importance of collaboration and playing an active role in group tasks. To broaden my understanding of business operations, I completed a two-week work experience placement at the Bespoke Kitchen Company. During this time, I observed and assisted in various aspects of the business, gaining insight into the importance of communication, branding, and advertising. Given my enthusiasm for mathematics and data handling, I was initially tasked with managing spreadsheets to record customer orders. Additionally, I guided clients through the showrooms, showcasing the quality of the kitchens and helping to persuade them to make a purchase. To support the company’s marketing efforts, I also assisted in a kitchen photo shoot for a local magazine. This experience reinforced my decision to pursue a degree in business, as I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities involved.

Beyond academics, I actively participate in extracurricular activities. Through debating, I have developed strong speaking and listening skills, allowing me to articulate my viewpoints effectively and think quickly under pressure. Additionally, I play rugby outside of school for my club team and have been a member of my school’s 1st XV rugby team for two years, serving as captain of my house rugby team. These experiences have strengthened my leadership and communication skills, as well as my ability to work collaboratively. Playing at a competitive level requires dedication, time management, and teamwork—all qualities I have honed through sport.

Within school, I have taken on leadership roles, including serving as a senior supervisor and house charity representative for the past year. These responsibilities have taught me the importance of trust and dependability, qualities that are essential for success in the business world.

In my spare time, I have worked for over a season as a Ground Safety Steward at Blackburn Rovers Football Club. This role has helped me develop key skills such as public engagement, creating a welcoming atmosphere, and working under pressure. It has also strengthened my sense of responsibility and reliability.

Stewarding at Blackburn Rovers has been a rewarding break from college life, offering a unique and engaging experience. At college, I was a member of a cross-college committee, representing the student voice on ICT-related issues. In this role, I served as a liaison between students and the administration, using my ICT knowledge to help address concerns while gaining valuable insight into problem-solving within a business-like environment.

Outside of work and academics, I am passionate about staying active and regularly go running to maintain my fitness. I find that running challenges me both physically and mentally, helping me to focus, clear my mind, and manage everyday stress effectively.

I have also volunteered with Thames21, an environmental charity, to clean up litter, remove graffiti, and improve habitats along the Thames foreshore at Battersea Bridge. I found this experience both enjoyable and rewarding, as it contributed to a cleaner and healthier environment.

After learning about the severe impact of air pollution in London, which is responsible for numerous health issues, I took part in the Islington Giving’s UnLtd Challenge, working on a project to help reduce air pollution in Islington. This opportunity allowed me to explore innovative solutions for tackling pollution in major cities like London, highlighting both the health and environmental benefits of cleaner air.

I consider myself an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual, which I believe has been a key driving force behind my academic achievements. Attending a bilingual and international school has also given me the valuable skill of fluency in both English and Arabic, further enhancing my ability to communicate and engage in diverse environments.

I have actively sought opportunities to expand my understanding of the financial sector, including participating in the Student Investor Challenge. Through this experience, I conducted in-depth analyses of share data, honing my analytical skills. Effective communication was essential as I collaborated with my team, presenting mathematically reasoned investment strategies and assessing long-term financial benefits.

My passion for mathematics extends beyond academics; I tutor GCSE students in mathematics weekly, helping them strengthen their understanding of key concepts. Additionally, I worked on a mathematics leadership team to organize and deliver an Olympic-themed maths challenge day for 200 Year 7 students, further developing my leadership and problem-solving skills.

As a member of the school council, I represent my peers, discussing ways to enhance the student experience. I also regularly serve as a school ambassador, assisting at parents’ evenings and open days. Beyond academics, I am passionate about performing arts and cultural engagement. I have built confidence and leadership skills by participating in stage performances, volunteering in my cultural society, and engaging in activities such as dancing, hosting events, and singing.

Music has also played a significant role in my personal and academic growth. Learning instruments such as the piano and guitar has enhanced my mathematical ability, comprehension, and reading skills. Additionally, I am an active individual and have earned the Community Sports Leadership Award. I enjoy taekwondo, basketball, yoga, and dance, all of which contribute to my discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

To maintain my fitness, I enjoy walking in the countryside with my father and dog, as well as taking weekly horse-riding lessons. Horse riding has deepened my appreciation for nature and reinforced the importance of teamwork, as success in such a demanding sport relies on strong coordination between riders and their horses, as well as cooperation with fellow equestrians.

Beyond the physical benefits of strength and endurance, this experience has also enhanced my sense of responsibility, social skills, and self-confidence. The discipline and resilience gained through sports add depth to my character, qualities that also support my growth as a student.

I actively engage in volunteer work both within and outside of school. As part of my school’s ‘in-class support’ scheme, I assisted Year 10 students with learning difficulties, helping them to better understand their subjects. Additionally, I volunteered at the British Heart Foundation and contributed to various school events, which led to me receiving a ‘Services to School’ award.

These experiences have strengthened my communication and teamwork skills, qualities that will be invaluable during my university studies and beyond.
