Art Personal Statement Example 2
My previous experiences have been very wide and varied. I grew up in the 60’s near Dartington and Totnes were all the art and crafts that I was surrounded by had a hugh influence on me. Walking around Plymouth Barbican in my teenage years I admired and was always fascinated by the work of Robert Lenliewicz.
I have spent a lot of my life sailing which has helped me to before a resourceful and strong leader with good communicative skills who can work well in a team or as an individual. Sailing along with my love of the country side, riding and walking have given me fantastic opportunities to observe the sea and sky and the constantly varying light. I have amassed a huge amount of information in the form of photographs, sketches and mental images. My studies in Marine Science and Equine Science have filled me with ideas of how science and art can work together and have given me ideas for projects which could combining my existing knowledge with various art forms.
Over the last 2 years I have attended Newlyn School of Art for various courses; I have just complete a yearlong Defining Art course which has made me realise just how important art is to me and how much more I have within me and need to express. I find myself constantly painting and sketching as a response to the world around me.
I believe the course offered at Plymouth will provide and excite my artistic curiosity even further and give me the opportunity to challenge my practical skills and continue my understanding of the art world.
Recently I have been inspired by the work of print maker John Howard, artists James Hankey and Jack Davis; their inspiring works along with the work of many others have helped me to "think outside of my box".
Art to me expresses the joy and freedom of being able to see and feel. It allows me to live without inhibition and constraint, empowering me to express the connection I feel for my environment and my love of life with in it.
I believe the course offered at Plymouth will provide and excite my artistic curiosity even further and give me the opportunity to challenge my practical skills and continue my understanding of the art world.
Drawing on my experiences of being in the country side, reflecting on the patchwork of life that is found in nature along with my deep love of the sea and sailing; I’m able to evoke a sense of space using colour, light and freedom. Through my work I explore the symbiotic relationship of the land and sea and look forward to continuing the process.
