English Literature Personal Statement Example 2
My imagination is a big part of my life, as I love to write and create different worlds and characters. The works of JK Rowling first introduced me, when I was younger, to all of the possibilities that can be found in a fictional world, and since delving into these, I now aspire to become a writer. Various authors' work that I have read since the days of Harry Potter have had a great impact on my life, and about the way I think every day, and I would love to be able to have the opportunity to do this with the younger generation in the future. The thought of being able to inspire other people enthrals me, and I really believe that I can do that one day. By attending university I can develop my imagination further, and improve my skills in interpretation and expression, which will help me to become a better writer.
The written word and all that it has to offer has always been intriguing to me, which began with my parents reading books to me as a child. This fascination has only increased throughout High School, where I have been introduced to many different texts, genres and authors, which have allowed me to explore different ways in which a story can be told. My English class recently got to sit in on an English Studies lecture on Creative Writing at Stirling University, which only increased my passion for continuing English at degree level. At university I hope to learn about different literary movements, and how to analyse texts in greater depth.
At my school I have been given the chance to assist one of my English teachers with their first year class, which has given me a greater sense of responsibility and a substantial boost in confidence. I also believe this has improved my communication skills and my ability to work with others, since I get to answer any questions the first years have about their work. Higher Geography and Psychology particularly help improve my analytical skills, and Photography, also at higher level, helps to better my creativity. Advanced Higher English allows me to further my knowledge in textual analysis, literary techniques and poetic form, which will all help me with carrying on English into university.
In my first year of high school I participated in the RED book awards, which involved going along to the event and to give a presentation on a book. This allowed me to improve my team working skills as my school's book group and myself, all had to work together to build our demonstration. I achieved a yellow belt, green tags, in Tae Kwon Do in 2010, which instilled in me obedience, self-discipline and self-confidence, and I would have loved to have pursued it further, except I had to stop, due to an ankle injury. This disappointed me, but I still loved the sport in the small time in which I participated.
In fourth year I was placed in a Nursery School for a week, where I got to experience the working world, and also how reading and writing is first introduced to toddlers and pre-schoolers. I got to help with several lessons which widened my perspective on the issue of teaching youngsters how to read, and how to write. Even though it was only a week I spent there, I think that I benefitted from the experience considerably.
In my spare time, I enjoy socialising with my friends, reading as many books as I can, and writing, a lot. Socialising is important to me because I believe that my friends help me to grow as a person. Reading is very important to me, as I value learning and improving yourself in any way possible, so imagination is my key goal here. And then, whether it be a short story for a homework task or a silly little anecdote about my favourite television show, I don't think a day goes by without me writing at least one little thing. Writing is my passion, and by going to university, I hope to succeed in my dream of becoming an author someday.

It took me a while to get this spot on but it was so worth it! Definitely think about getting an English Teacher to check over it for, maybe even for them to suggest how it could be improved, I found that the help I was given by one of my English Teachers was invaluable.
I applied for English Literature at Stirling, Edinburgh Napier and Glasgow University, and also English & Creative Writing at Dundee University. I recently got rejected from Glasgow but have yet to hear back from the others. I think this was more to do with the fact I don't have all of the grades yet, more than my Personal Statement letting me down.
I hope this helps you, and I wish you the best of luck. I'll warn you now, it's bloody nerve wracking waiting for replies, and when that email comes through, you'll be a wreck!
