Psychology Personal Statement Example 74

How do the components of one's human psyche truly shape interactions within a changing society? Is "evil" born, or a response to societal factors? The many atrocities that are occurring in the world right now, from the Syrian civil war to the murder of Lee Rigby - is there a root cause to why they are happening?

The versatility of psychology is a significant component of why I want to study it at university, in the sense that it is current and can be applied to real world contexts: crime, child development, even how we think!

I yearn to decipher the complexities and intricacies of human nature, and a psychology degree will illustrate these in such a robust way that I will be able to obtain the satisfactory solutions I have craved for, concerning the world and myself.

Furthering my education by studying my chosen A Levels has given me a grasp of how psychology can be applied to numerous settings. Business has enabled me to comprehend how employee job satisfaction is imperative to a company, studying real life situations in which low job satisfaction has had a detrimental impact on productivity.

Biology has allowed me access to the medical viewpoints of how the human mind operates, furnishing a comparison between physical and psychological points of view. Psychology has given me the opportunity to study the work of psychologists who have provided theories for human behaviour.

I found conformity and obedience to authority in war especially fascinating. These subjects have developed my organisational and listening skills significantly and, in addition, established effective writing and communication skills through my completion of essays and reports.

Whilst undertaking my A levels at sixth form, I desired to take a more active role within the school. Subsequently, I was awarded the position of a psychology departmental prefect.

My duties include guiding younger psychology students as well as my peers if they have any problems with their studies. It also involves talking to parents at open evenings about the psychology course, answering any questions they may have. I was also a peer mentor to the younger members of the school.

My role was to track a particular student's progress in order to ensure that they achieve their full potential, and to discuss any problems they may have with their studies.

Both of these roles have helped me to develop my interpersonal and communication skills substantially, and improved my confidence in talking to large groups of people.

In my free time, I run a Psychology discussion club, debating real world issues of psychological interest with younger members of the school; an example being gender roles in the media.

Additionally, I am embarking on a psychologically-based online course in conjunction with my A Levels. This course has provided me with an even greater insight into psychology.

Outside of school, I completed unpaid work experience at a retail store, working as an assistant. It was essential that I balanced my time effectively between working and studying.

As a result my time keeping skills developed considerably. Reading makes up a sizeable portion of what I like to do in my spare time. It enables me to see life through another's eyes, viewing their perspective of the world.

It sparks a desire to widen my own personal viewpoints, which I can take on board and use in the future. I love reading both fiction and non-fiction texts.

One of my favourite books is 'To Kill a Mockingbird', where one particular theme running throughout was the racial segregation of 1930s America.

It piqued my curiosity to learn why some children learnt from their parents to treat other races as inferior. Social learning theory can explain this behaviour through imitation of role models.

A degree in psychology will lay the foundations for a distinguished career as a Psychologist. It will provide me with the tools to guide my own moral compass to the point where I can help the world, one person at a time.
