Music Technology Personal Statement Example 6

Throughout my life, I have always been fascinated by technology and how it can be combined with music. Whether that be using technology to create music in software such as Ableton Live, which has seen the emergence of entirely new genres such as EDM, or its use in studios to aid in the production of music. After attending several open days, my interest was sparked further after it became apparent that the course strikes the perfect balance between creativity and using technology. Whilst I have a passion to create, I also want the opportunity to use many technologies whilst doing so. Interactive Technology particularly interests me as it will give me further insight into using technology to create sound in innovative ways. I am also fascinated by Sound Design, looking at how sound is used in game design as well as film to create an immersive experience.

I spent a lot of my time within DAWs during my BTEC Music Technology course, and also use them at home. I enjoy recording, mixing and producing audio and wish to further my knowledge and go on to do more amazing things. Whilst I’m currently fluent in Cubase, I would like to become fluent using Pro Tools, Logic as well as many other industry staples such as Ableton. I want to experience everything that Music Technology has to offer and this drive and commitment to the course will naturally snowball into a strong willingness to learn. BTEC Music Technology grabbed me from the very start where I learnt about live sound and went on to sound engineer a show for my school. I also learnt about digital audio and used MIDI to recreate a song. I produced a ‘Live Lounge’ album where I produced and mixed all my tracks using Cubase. I recorded using condenser as well as dynamic microphones and direct input where appropriate. As a technology lover, I found A Level Computing fascinating too as I learnt how hardware operates. I even coded my own programs in Pascal, which could come in useful should I want to program my own synthesizers. A Level History and Religious Studies also allowed me to carry out my own in-depth research, write and submit a large piece of graded work, a useful skill during university.

My previous placement at a music studio was such a good experience for me, that I decided then that this is what I wanted to do. I spent my time setting up recordings, mixing, producing and playing guitar in tracks. I formed a band with my colleagues and I enjoyed acting as a sound engineer as well as playing within the group. I planned out how we would record tracks, played on those tracks and then produced it. I’m comfortable working within a team, and thoroughly enjoyed working with others and collaborating using our separate creative visions. I used a 24 channel desk to mix, however I would like to use even bigger and more powerful desks in my workflow. I also taught guitar to young people, as the studio was situated within a youth centre. I currently work as a bartender in a busy Cardiff nightclub which has allowed me to improve my people skills and become more confident as an individual. I’m very outgoing and look forward to meeting new people.

I spend much time playing guitar and recording myself with my basic home setup. My enthusiasm for technology has also led to me developing an interest into how things work. I have built my own computer to edit videos and use DAWs efficiently. I keep up with the latest technology such as hardware releases, whether that is CPUs, GPUs or emerging consumer electronics like VR devices.

I’m looking to expand my knowledge and further myself within music technology and this course will help me achieve that. I aspire to work within a media company such as the BBC doing TV/Radio or even a music studio much like my previous experience. I feel I am the perfect candidate for this course due to my technological background and drive towards the subject. I look forward to throwing myself into university life, learning new technologies and creating music.
