Physics is fascinating. It’s exciting, it’s thrilling, it’s relevant, it’s really interesting, and that’s just the start. I’ve always asked lots of questions and tried to figure out how and why everything works as it does. From being small I’ve always tried to solve every kind of puzzle. Physics holds the answer to many of my unanswered questions and the promise of a challenge to be solved. It’s the basis of everything if you look close enough and holds the solution to many of the life’s mysteries. Studying it will give me the skills needed to be able to make a difference to the world.

I find it amazing how everything changes when you’re on a quantum scale and how there’s so much we simply don’t know. I enjoy the fact that there is always something new to discover and I love the feeling of looking at something and understanding how it works. It has so many practical uses, from communication to medical imaging to harnessing energy. It also gives me many transferable skills that I will be able to use in the future.

I have also found Chemistry and Maths enjoyable at A-level; they helped me develop problem solving and analysis skills. Plus I find the interaction between the sciences fascinating, in that certain aspects can be classified as more than one science. I enjoy keeping up to date with new scientific news and subscribe to BBC Focus magazine.

I took the opportunity to do a YASS Open University course on ‘How the Universe Works’, because I was fascinated with the subject. This was done through independent study, and improved my time management skills. It gave me good experience at working at university level, and it showed I am able do it and what would be expected of me at university.

I have completed both my bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and I want to complete my gold in the future. I had to be adaptable and determined for this. It made me more independent and helped me to develop team-working skills. I was Chair of the Student Council at school and later a student representative at college. This has helped me develop my leadership skills and has involved me co-operating and communicating effectively with my peers and teachers. Also being an active Member and Secretary of the Debating Society has helped me become more confident when talking in front of groups of people.

I am an Avon representative. This has helped me to become more organised. It has shown me the importance of keeping accurate records, because when I have made mistakes it has caused problems and often embarrassment for me. Dealing with customers on a one to one basis has helped me to improve my communication skills. In this job I have to be reliable in order to keep my customers and I have gone out delivering in snow and torrential rain.

For the past three years, I’ve volunteered as a Young Leader at Rainbows (section of Girl Guides for 5-7 year olds) and hope to gain my leadership qualification soon. This involves me planning and executing activities as part of a team and independently which are appropriate for their age. Using my own initiative is an essential part of this. At times I am responsible for the safety and happiness of small groups of girls. I find this role really enjoyable and rewarding, well worth giving up my Friday evenings.

After I have done my degree I would like to get involved in cutting edge research and then I would consider going into teaching to share my enthusiasm and knowledge.
