How much does an average gap year cost?

Before you even start planning, you might assume the final amount is in the thousands. While you would be correct, an average gap year now costs around £2,500, but you can go travelling for less than this if you are prepared to slum it for a while!

Round the world tickets can be bought for under £1,000, so travelling doesn't have to be as expensive as you think.

You can also pick up some part time work while abroad to top up your funds, and get some great work experience under your belt at the same time to add to your CV.

How much money do you need for 6 months travelling?

For a long term trip abroad during your gap year, we recommend you allow at least £1,000 a month to be comfortable.

Again, as mentioned earlier, you can always find some temporary or part time work to get more cash in your account.

Can I travel for free during my gap year?

To keep costs to a minimum, or even travel for free on your gap year, we suggest you:

• Teach English abroad
• Choose budget-friendly destinations
• Volunteer in exchange for accommodation
• Get a temporary or part time job
• Work on a cruise ship
• Book flights well in advance
• Eat local food
• Stay in hostels
• Find alternative modes of transport.

How can I raise money for a gap year?

There are many ways you can start getting cash in the bank for your travels (or anything else you plan to do). These include:

• Getting a job
• Selling things on eBay
• Asking family and friends for donations (or do odd jobs in return for payment)
• Fundraising activities
• Reclaim any tax you are entitled to
• Considering working abroad during your gap year travels
• Working out the essentials (and what you can live without).
