Linguistics personal statements

English Language & Linguistics personal statement
Language is common to all people. By its nature, it is something that links us all together, yet our use of language is a major factor in defining us all as individuals. For something that comes so naturally to all of us, language can hold great power and influence..

English Language/Linguistics personal statement
It was whilst in the linguistically diverse culture of South Africa, that my wish to study English Language and Linguistics was confirmed. In a country with eleven national languages, I was able to see Krashen's theories on second language acquisition in practice, learn about the 'clicking' sounds of Xhosa and meet people, who are deemed "uneducated", yet are fluent in two or more languages..

Linguistics personal statement
I feel the reason I have such an affinity for linguistics is because I am bilingual. I often find myself compelled by the relationship between English and Lithuanian, the two languages I speak fluently..

English Language and Linguistics personal statement
When I decided to take English Language for A Level, I did not realise that it would soon become an obsession of mine; I have found myself analysing posters, advertisements and even conversations I hear..

Linguistics MA
My interest in linguistics was gradually shaped throughout my life by all the different ways in which I have experienced languages: as a learner, translator, and as a teacher. However, it was the times spent living in Russia and later in the UK that made me fully understand that language can be a means of conveying much more than just our thoughts..

My personal Statement by JWo32 at 15:21:04 16/05/2006

I am not sure how to submit a personal statment,so i'll just post it all here, i got offers of BBB from : UCL, Edinburgh, Manchester, York, Sussex and Bangor with this one...

My choice to study Linguistics at University stems from my fascination in the way that languages function and operate, and how they have changed through the ages.
One aspect of linguistics that appeals to me is the way it blends elements of both science and art. When we briefly touched on phonetics in a recent French lesson I found it highly stimulating and was intrigued to learn more.
I am currently studying German, French and History at A-level. I enjoy immensely the different challenges posed by these three subjects. It is interesting to see the similarities and the differences between the two languages, and the way in which certain Linguistic ideas are present in both languages, and indeed society as a whole.
My interest in the study of language has been greatly furthered since I entered the sixth form, as we now study not just the words themselves, but also the society, culture, and current issues of the relevant country. This naturally broadens one’s horizons, and increases awareness of other cultures and civilizations.
In school I take part in many of the activities on offer. I contribute regularly to ‘Rigor Mortis’, the School’s history magazine. I am also editor and founder of the School’s music magazine. I like to compete in sporting activities, and play for the School’s second and first football teams, and the hockey team. This is something I would certainly wish to maintain at University. Last year I took part in the Ten Tors challenge, walking 45 miles over difficult terrain, and finishing as a complete team. This was a fantastic event, as through the course of the training and the event itself, I developed a real camaraderie with my team-mates, and it was this solidarity that enabled us to finish so strongly. I felt very proud of my achievements, especially since the weather was some of the worst that had been seen at the ten tors event for many years. During our training we had had consistently excellent weather, and so the fact that we managed to overcome this obstacle without any preparation was very gratifying. This year I hope to do the 55 mile route, as I want to test myself against this even greater challenge.
I also find drama very enjoyable, and this year I took part in the school production of Max Frisch’s Andorra. It was an excellent experience as it helped not only with my German studies, but also helped me to gain enhanced interpersonal skills and imbued me with greater assurance.
Higher education is the perfect opportunity for me to continue my studies at more in-depth and intellectual level. I believe that through the course of my school life I have acquired many positive skills, which will be beneficial to me in later life. Studying a subject at University level could only enhance these skills, and thus prepare me well for the future.
